Laut Tawar Lake is a lake located in the Gayo Highlands, Aceh Tengah, (Takengon) Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam. The existence of Lake Laut Tawar is the pride of the people of Aceh Tengah (Takengon). This lake is a natural attraction visited by many domestic and foreign tourists.
This quiet lake is located east of the City Takengon, in the Gayo highlands (1,250 meters above sea level), Lut Tawar District, Province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam. This freshwater lake sea is the largest lake in the province of Aceh with an area of 5472 hectares, about 17 km length and width of 5.5 km.
Two hills that flank the lake, more and show the beauty of the lake. The unification of the waters and terrain provides many sources of livelihood for the community, especially around the Gayo highlands. Based on the local story (Gayo tribe) about depik fish, ornamental fish that is shaped like a slender, white scaly and shiny with hands the size of a thumb that live in Lake Laut Tawar, that fish depik derived from rice grains are discharged into the lake. This fish will come to the surface of the lake at certain seasons, especially during the rainy season. Before the season arrives, hordes depik hiding in the south of the lake, at the foot of Mount Bur Kelieten. Depik is a gift from God to the people Gayo, despite ongoing consumption, fish populations are not inexhaustible.
Access to this Lake Laut Tawar (Takengon) more easily reached through the City Bireun. There is a small terminal elf hangout special transportation to Takengon. The duration of the trip about 5 hours at a cost of approximately Rp. 25,000. Apart from Bireun, an alternative way to Takengon can also be reached through Blang Kejeren and Kutacane.
